Water Softeners work on an ion exchange process where sodium ions that have accumulated on the media are exchanged for hardness ions from the hard water as it passes through the water softener.

As water flows past the UV lamp Ultraviolet light alters the DNA material in cells so that bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other microorganisms can no longer reproduce. The microorganisms are considered dead, and the risk of disease from them is eliminated. The process of UV Disinfection is accomplished without adding any harmful chemicals to your drinking water and does not distort the water or effect its pH value. Air is injected into the water either using a venturi or by spraying water through an air cap in the media tank, oxidizing the iron and sulphur and then capturing the precipitated iron in the media tank before back washing it to the drain.

Moving and removing as much of the salt as possible is a good start. Adding hot water, letting it softener up the salt for a few hours or over night and then regenerating the water softener will start to remove the clog.

Start by shutting off the waterflow from the pressure tank. Release the pressure and remove the lamp and sleeve. Clean the sleeve and replace the lamp being careful not to handle it with your bare hands.

By running a bleach solution through your household plumbing out of every faucet etc, then giving the chlorine solution at least a 4 hour contact time you will disinfect all of your household plumbing.

The overall process is very straight forward. Shut off the water flow, release the pressure and then remove the lamp, clean the quartz sleeve and replace the filters.

Make sure you disinfect the faucet before you take the water sample from a high flow source like a bathtub faucet.
