TANNIN FILTER Maintenance Pro Tips & Tricks

Are you looking to maintain the tannin filter in your home, cottage or cabin for your family? Not sure where to start? Want some advice from the pros? Relax! This blog is for you.

By the end of this blog and the video, you’ll know where to start, what you’ll need, how and when to maintain it, and what you should definitely avoid doing! Let's get started...

The first step is to know what make and model tannin filter you currently have in your home, cottage or cabin.  Most tannin filters are similar in design and manufacture, but each brand has its own maintenance nuances. Today we are talking about maintaining the industry's best, the Clack valved tannin filter.  These are used by countless manufacturers on their water softeners, like our HUM brand, but also Water Depot, Nelsen and many others.

Not sure if your tannin filter has a Clack valve? Just look at the top and the back — if you see red bypass valve handles that are arrow-shaped, yours is a clack Valve like ours!

If you've ever experienced the frustration of brown water or unsightly staining caused by tannins in your water, a tannin filter could be the solution you've been searching for.

Tannins are organic compounds found in natural resources like plants and trees. When these compounds seep into your water supply, they can give it an unappealing brown colour and leave stubborn stains on surfaces, utensils, and even clothing. This not only affects the aesthetic appeal of your water but can also make everyday tasks, such as doing laundry, an inconvenience.

A tannin filter is specifically designed to tackle this problem head-on. It works by utilizing advanced filtration technology to effectively remove tannins from your water, leaving it clean, clear, and free from any discolouration. By filtering out these unwanted compounds, a tannin filter ensures that you can confidently carry out your daily activities without worrying about stained fabrics or discoloured water.

    1. Adding salt.  Both tannin filters and water softeners use the same kind of salt.  I always suggest pellets. >> This video will give you more info!

    3. Cleaning the injector. If you're on well water, clean the injector every 5 years; for city water, clean it every 10 years. NOTE: If using your water softener to also get rid of the iron in your well water, you’ll need to clean or replace every 2 years. >> Check out this video to learn more.

    4. Clean out the brine tank every 5 years if you currently or have ever used rock salt.  Same as cleaning the injector, if you have well water you'll want to clean the brine tank every 5 years; city water every 10 years.  >> This video shows you how!
PRO TIP: to keep your brine tank cleaner, allow your brine tank to run out of salt once per year.

    5. Exercise the bypass valve to keep it from leaking, if and when you need it.

    6. Add citric acid to clean the media tank annually.
